NASA declares Phoenix lander dead after Mars mission ends
NASA announced the Phoenix lander is officially dead after failed attempts to reestablish contact. An orbiting camera captured a collapsed solar panel, and Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter observations suggested structural damage from carbon dioxide ice. Phoenix landed near the north pole on May 25, 2008 and operated five months.
