Genes Link Frizzled 6 to Hair Patterns Across Species

A study by researchers at Johns Hopkins and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute ties the Frizzled 6 gene to hair patterning in mice. Loss of the gene causes unusual whorls and tufts. humans likely share a similar effect though not yet confirmed. The work, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, traces Frizzled genes from fruit flies to mammals and notes diverse patterns across species including horses, cattle, pigs, and dogs.
