Foreign Minister George Yeh spoke by phone as demonstrations intensified and Premier Yu’s cabinet met in emergency session amid talk of resignations. Martial law was imposed and Nationalist forces were deployed to secure the city.
A Bowling Green State University student was shot in the leg while allegedly breaking into a trailer home. Wood County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting did not appear tied to a campus riot as more than 1500 students protested housing rules. Everett Miller, 20, was in serious condition. doctors amputated his leg after being shot by Richard Crum, a gas station attendant, who fired when three intruders broke a window at the trailer home. Crum and Miller were among the names listed alongside Knofel, Cleve Jana, and Huston in connection with the incident and riot coverage.
In Rome a young Italian youth invaded the U S embassy shouting death to the Americans and stabbed a woman librarian, Mrs Giancarlo Govoni, 33, an Italian employed by US Information Agency. She was rushed to hospital in shock and expected to recover in about 182 days. The assailant fled into the crowd after the attack as police hunted him.
A Pittsburgh investigation into Elizabeth Township Mrs Mildred DeVirgio’s disappearance faced a twist when her son George DeVirgilio 16 reported a 6 pm call claiming she was “okay” from Ravenna Ohio. Detectives say phone records show no such call from Ravenna and suspect the call originated in the Pittsburgh area.
