City to license bicycles and regulate night riding

Mayor Joseph Q. Petro announced an ordinance to license all bicycles at 25 cents per year and to require night lighting and adherence to traffic rules. A Boy Scout court for offenders was proposed, similar to Cleveland’s model, with 1200 to 2000 bikes in Elyria.

Thomas Moody Dies. Former Elyria Athlete in Texas

Thomas Moody 28 son of Mrs E L Moody of Elyria died in a Wichita Falls clinic Texas after illness since Saturday. A former Elyria High School swimming star he lived in Texas five years with Shell Petroleum Corp. Survived by wife Elizabeth McCully of Tulsa mother sister and three brothers. Funeral Friday in Tulsa with burial there.

Poppy Sale Planned in Elyria by Legion Auxiliary and VFW

The American Legion Auxiliary announces its annual poppy sale on Saturday May 27 on Elyria streets. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will also sell poppies that day. Funds support relief and welfare work by disabled veterans.

Winners Of Legion Medals In Elyria Named

Virginia Goodrich and Francis Oberinger were chosen as outstanding girl and boy from 27 eighth graders nominated by Elyria teachers for 1939 American Legion medals. The awards will be presented at the Memorial Day program by John Kolopos. Judges were William Gregory Allyn Rose and Carl Smith. Goodrich attends Ely School and Oberinger St Marys School.

King and Queen Pursue Royal Visit Through Wheat Country

Survivor Tells Of Closing The Bulkhead Door

Portsmouth May 23 five men escaped from the food ed after battery room of the sunk en submarine Squalus before electrician's mate Lloyd Maness swung shut the bulkhead door saving his life and the lives of 32 shipmates but sealing the doom of 26. In a navy approved interview Maness described the frantic moment and his quick decision to close the bulkhead door and seal the control room. He recalled shouting to others to keep the door open before it slipped back on its hinges. He spoke of the crew's actions, the lack of orders, and the grim toll as the ship sank and rescue came.

Electrician's Mate Bland Describes Sub Rescue Ordeal

Electrician's Mate Judson T Bland recounts tense hours of 23 men entombed in a disabled submarine and 26 drowned comrades. 182 New Citizens To Be Honored In Lorain Program

One hundred eighty two citizens from sixteen nationalities will receive citizenship papers at Lorain High School auditorium. The ceremony includes flags exchange, national anthems, and remarks by D A Cook judge. Participants include local officials schools Ameri canization groups and the Elyria American Legion. The program closes with America the Beautiful.

Final dive pursued as Squalus rescue ends with 26 lost

Navy divers make a last bid to find life among 26 men believed dead in the Squalus as the Falcon's diving bell completes its final ascent. Rescue authorities declare the 26 doomed after a cold 40 degree ocean floor and four flooded compartments.

Pneumonia Fatal To Three Year Old Twin

Carol Dallas aged three died at Elyria Memorial Hospital from pneumonia after admission on March 16. Premature twin born February 13 1936 at the hospital weighing seven pounds at birth. Fire kills mother and daughter near Piketon in accidental blaze

Coroner R A Trego ruled the deaths of Mrs. Julia Silcott, 52, and her daughter Vivian, 20, accidental after a one story home five miles west of Piketon burned last night. The flames left them burned beyond recognition as firefighters battled the blaze.
