Lorain district officials warn that state aid and heavy reliance on personal property taxes strain finances. Republic steel’s large property tax share supports schooling, while state aid per pupil lags costs, leaving Lorain with a fragile budget and bleak outlook without broader funding reform.

Plea Court Witness Comments Highlight Grudges In Case
In a plea court witness testimony, Lieux asserted the case was overcharged from the start. He described tensions between Art Charles and Vazquez, noting an on again off again relationship and suggesting Vazquez never wanted the matter to begin. Police records claim Vazquez reported Charles entered her home and rummaged through possessions, with Charles later removing items and disputing back rent. Charles, Elyria officer since 1978, was injured in 1996, retired 1997. Contact Cindy Leise.

County building changes eyed as project moves forward
Commissioner Mary Jo Vasi will study more exact prices before design changes. Torres calls his estimate rough while Cordes notes other ornamental items to discuss through the project. The board unanimously allowed architects to draft an estimate for changes. Engraving the county seat on glass was discussed and a building sign at the top was rejected. A possible entryway sign or engraving of the building name was proposed. Digging at the justice center could start today with a 105-foot rig from West Virginia to anchor foundations, as steel arrives and parts are still unsettled.
