Sudeten Germans Named From Mountain Region
The Sudeten Germans, about 3,225,000 strong or one fifth of Czechoslovakia’s population, trace their name to the Sudeten Mountains in the northwest. They were pre-war Austria citizens and did not form part of the German Reich. Czechoslovakia gained only the Lucin district from Germany after Versailles, a small area with mixed Czech and German inhabitants. The Sudeten lands lie in eight zones around the western frontier, with intertwined Czech communities and a center that remains largely Czech.
