A crowd of about 1000 highway laborers surged to Greenwich Town Hall demanding $6.50 a day, crashing the front door as police struggled. Town Counsel Wilbur S. Wright warned of militia, while police deployed tear gas and fire hoses. attorney John Knox of Local 66 was injured by shattered glass.
Atlee Pomerene former United States Senator from Ohio will deliver the Memorial Day address at Ridgeville Town Hall, with ceremonies starting 10 30 am. The program includes cemetery services at Fields Corners and North Ridgeville Catholic Cemetery with firing squads and buglers, prayers by Rev Hubert E Cobb, and songs by Ridgeville and St Peter's School pupils. A parade to the township cemetery will follow led by Isadore Diederich, featuring the Elyria American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and a tribute to the 12 unknown dead with Taps by the Elyria corps.

Today’s low readings include Port Arthur 30 White River 32 Cochrane 32. A Southern disturbance moved along the Florida Peninsula up the Atlantic and now centers over Southern New York with showery conditions in the North Atlantic States and Lower Lake Region.

John H Garfield grandson of the martyred president James A Garfield was found dead at his Mentor Ohio residence. He had worked since January for Boland and Cornelius Co steamship operators and earlier with Isthmian Steamship Lines as district manager. He is survived by widow Janet Dodge Garfield and five children Janet James Francis John and Douglas.
Harry Mayne aged 33 of Grafton suffered a fracture of the left arm when his car was crowded from the road and overturned into a ditch near Grafton last night around 7 30 p.m. His wife and child, seven, escaped with slight injuries. Mayne was taken to Memorial Hospital.
In central Germany and the Ruhr industrial district unrest by unemployed people escalated today with riots in several towns. A separate report states Garfield was found dead at home with a gunshot wound to the head, Sheriff James Maloney of Lake County confirming an investigation suggests suicide.
Elyria schools launch an annual summer athletic program at Ely Stadium starting June 22. A new girls program, led by Miss Marian Kemble, will run alongside the boys program directed by A N Smith. Tennis basics and competitions, softball for girls, multiple softball leagues for boys, and weekly tennis tournaments are planned. Three horsehoe tournaments and distinct time blocks for children and adults are on the tentative schedule.
MITCHEL FIELD N Y May 23 Army air corps mass maneuvers over Manhattan Island were delayed three hours due to a low ceiling and threatening weather. A total of 672 planes were to depart Long Island airports at 3 26 p m instead of 12 26 p m as planned while awaiting orders to sail north into Connecticut and down the Hudson to engage an enemy threat along the Atlantic seaboard.
In a $50,000 libel case, jurors for plaintiff M F Peer versus publisher David Gibson of the Lorain Journal and Samuel Horvitz failed to agree after about six and a half hours of deliberation. Foreman George L Jenkins said the panel stood seven to five for the plaintiff, with initial votes eight to four, and about 15 ballots were cast. Judge W B Thompson discharged the jurors at noon after they reported no verdict. Plaintiff's Frank Scott said a new trial would be scheduled as soon as possible.
President Hoover at his Blue Ridge fishing camp broadcast to the nation from a log cabin setting. He honored 264 Cornell men who died in World War I, urged against glorifying war, and called on youth to remember shared ideals while previewing future camp speeches.
The American League will choose a successor to late E. S. Barnard, its president, at a noon Wednesday meeting at the Cleveland Hotel in Cleveland. Announcement said today.
Five Elyria patriotic organizations and auxiliaries join tomorrow at 10 30 a m at the Capitol Theatre for the annual Memorial Day Service. Rev. W C Fowler delivers the memorial sermon. Music by the Church of Christ quartet and Elyria Concert Orchestra. Color presentation flag salute and The Star Spangled Banner. Also roll calls, taps, prayers, and patriotic musical numbers.
Sandusky May 23 Frank J Prout superintendent of Sandusky Schools announced that Governor George White unofficially tendered him the post of State Director of Education to succeed John L Clifton but he will not accept it. He was in Columbus Friday for a luncheon conference with the Governor.
The Elyria Oberlin Red Cross chapter plans a Friday dinner at East Oberlin Community Church to mark the Red Cross birth anniversary. Mayor L D Smith and attorney J Snoble will speak, with Miss Edith Metcalf describing drought relief work. A first aid demonstration by Ohio Public Service Company staff is planned, with reservations due by Tuesday.
Paris May 23 Premier Laval urged Foreign Minister Aristide Briand to reconsider his announced desire to resign. Laval stressed Briand’s guidance is needed until a naval accord is reached and for the Hague decision on the Austro German customs union. Briand will spend the weekend at Cocherel and make a definite statement at Wednesday’s cabinet meeting on his Geneva mission report.
Forty four ninth to eleventh grade students at Elsrna public and parochial schools are nominated as candidates for the American Legion School Award to be presented to one boy and one girl on Memorial Day by Elyria Post 12. Twenty two boys and twenty two girls from each eighth grade room compete, with the Legion committee selecting the winners based on honor courage scholarship leadership and service. The medal presentation will occur during Memorial Day exercises next Saturday with Dr. A R Agate presenting.
Frank Smith and William Smith of Vine avenue Lorain were arraigned before Justice 8 J George on liquor violation charges. Frank Smith faces selling while William Smith faces possession. Both were held on $800 bond each with trial set for May 26. They pleaded not guilty. Tony Tassess of Lorain also pleaded not guilty to possession and was held on $800 bond for trial May 27. Arrests were made today.
Lorain county takes last filing day Monday for cigaret licenses. Deputy auditor Clard Gull reports about 400 dealers in the county. Licenses issued June 1, applications due May 23. Retail licenses cost 50 dollars.
The building commission deferred awarding a contract for cement floor work at the tuberculosis sanatorium until Thursday. County Commissioner OD Murray said the panel chose gas ranges for the sanitarium instead of electric ranges.
County Treasurer N. D. Backus announced mid year tax collections will run June 1 through June 20, with about 30,000 tax bills mailed by May 28. The county expects about 2.25 million in June receipts, notes prior December and January payments. tax offices will operate in Lorain, Oberlin, Wellington, Grafton, La Grange and Kipton.
The third floor of the Lorain County Court House is being remodeled and refinished as the Sanitary Engineer office D. D. Andrus moves from the basement to two finished rooms. Assistant E. W. Rule, deputy surveyor C. E. Penfound, and stenographer Mrs Ruth Miller will work from the new location. The Auto License Department will return to its former basement site soon. Deputy County Auditor R. E. Hakes now operates from 700 Lorain County Savings Bank Building due to space limits.
Premier Ben ito Mussolini was thrown from his horse today and suffered slight facial bruises. The item notes a separate point about wholesale licenses priced at 200 and says failure to apply by Monday incurs a fee four times the license cost.
Plans for the twenty seventh annual convention of the Cleveland and Toledo Grand Commanderies of the Knights of St John in Elyria June 6 7 and 8 are nearing completion. A 7000 knight and lady parade is set for June 7 at 2 15 pm marching from Broad Street and East River Street through Broad Street to West Avenue and back to Ely Stadium for drills. Local plans include banquet at St Marys Church auditorium, a dance and reception, decorations cups and badges, with 2000 visitors expected and committees meeting again next Friday night.
A ferryboat collision near St. George New York injures 1,500 passengers as Tomkinsville rammed a pier and wrecked parts of the vessel while docked at Staten Island. Emergency crews responded. there were no serious injuries reported and investigators began work on the incident.
At the Rapidan conference the Hoover administration discussed major industries. Edsel Ford attended representing automobile manufacturing while the postal service was noted as a vast but loss making enterprise with a growing annual deficit. Hoover expressed concern over the post office department amid looming treasury pressures.
In Bucharest on May 23 the Danube overflow flooded parts of Galatz and nearby villages. About 8,000 people were homeless and several hundred houses were destroyed. Troops aided relief efforts.
Prosecutor Don W. Myers announced that approximately 40 cases will be considered by the grand jury at its second April term session starting Monday. Two secret investigations are planned, one in Lorain and one in Elyria, with seven cases and 19 witnesses scheduled for Monday. the session could run to Thursday or Friday.
