Wellington considers Dickson Street paving objections hearing

The council schedules a public hearing May 29 at 7 pm in council chambers to review the proposed concrete paving along Dickson Street from Courtland to Grand by front-foot assessments on adjacent property owners. The equalization board may determine fairness and include Roy Justice, Charles Vahnke, and Dorothy Lent.

Bronson center rezoning sent to voters for referendum

In Columbia the proposed conditional zoning would allow selling the Bronson School building and a catering service. The Lorain County Board of Elections ruled petitions for a referendum had enough valid signatures and the ballot language will be reviewed by the election board. Legal adviser Garrett Murray will decide ballot wording responsibility. The zoning was approved after hearings despite petitions with about 190 signatures. Residents criticized potential traffic and drainage impacts.

New London to Welcome Around the World Tropical Fish Shop

A new pet store named Around the World Tropical Fish is due to open near ELYRIA in New London by Memorial Day. The family business, owned by Oneta McCarthy and family, will stock saltwater and tropical fish, fish foods, books, shells, coral, tanks, and offer custom aquarium equipment orders. A weeklong opening giveaway includes a 10-gallon tank with fish. Regular hours posted: 10 am to 8 pm Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 7 pm Sunday.

Clearview adopts K–12 guidance program for fall

The LORAIN-Clearview School Board approved a kindergarten through 12 grade guidance plan to begin in the fall. Changes include one elementary guidance counselor for both elementary schools, Jim Novak taking over high school duties, and Jean Branzell becoming a full-time K–9 counselor split between Vincent and Darling schools.

Alzheimer’s Disease Seminar at UH Cleveland Clinic May 28

A free seminar on Alzheimer’s disease hosted by University Hospitals of Cleveland will occur May 28 from 5 30 to 7 00 PM at the Health Center building 2078 Abington Road. Bay Village Accepts 2000 From County For Summer Jobs

Bay Village Council approved a 2000 grant from Cuyahoga County for a summer youth job program. Mayor James Cowles said federal Juvenile Justice and Job Training Partnership funds will hire low income youths for part time work from June 10 to August 16, with hires expected within two weeks.

Olmsted Falls Student Wins IBM Watson Scholarship

Olmsted Falls High School student Thomas G. Keckrone is among 357 recipients nationwide of the Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship Program. The four year undergraduate awards range from eight thousand to thirty two thousand dollars for children of IBM employees. Winners are selected by test scores scholastic record and extracurriculars.

Four area students win scholarships at BGSU

Nearly 70 scholarships and academic awards were presented by Bowling Green State University College of Education. Lorain Elyria June Leidner received a $300 Harmon Scholarship for a part time woman student pursuing graduate studies. Copahoun Conny Berea Anne Tudhope received a $300 Gottshall Hex Memorial Scholarship for scholastic achievement. Kristi Sundberg Olmsted Falls received a $300 Gottshall Rex Memorial Scholarship for scholastic excellence. Kevin Kactson Norwalk received a $500 Charles and Alice Young Scholarship for leadership and strong academics.
