Congress moves to grant the army an emergency fund near 2 billion dollars while War Department estimates hinge on Hitler’s war costs. Senate debate begins as House ready to approve cash and contract authorizations for rapid defense.
A resolution to advance 5000 to Elyma for its personal tax distribution was passed by the council last night at the request of County Auditor Ellsworth Albert.
A trough of low pressure extends from Wisconsin to Texas as pressure rises in the Atlantic States and Northwest. Warmer in central valleys and lake region, cooler in northern plains and mountain areas. Rain fell along the Atlantic coast from Norfolk to Boston. scattered showers in the lake region and plains states.
In Washington on May 21 the Senate opened debate on a peacetime army appropriation bill of 1.82 billion while Sen. Claude Pepper D Florida introduced a resolution empowering the President to sell the Army and Navy air force to the Allies. Pepper urged swift action to stem the tide of barbarism and dictatorship as reports of German advances filled the chamber.
In Oberlin the Mor ris block on South Main street faced a second major blaze within eight days. Fire chief C R Graham and crew battled the early morning fire that started in the developing room of Meri-K photo shop on the second floor. The fire spread to the third floor damaging Odd Fellows and K of C rooms and offices of John Von Blum and H G Hoffner. Pfaff and Morris clothing store and Robinson Dry Cleaner suffered the heaviest damage with water and smoke affecting stock and fixtures. most merchandise reportedly removed from the latter. No loss estimate given.
Norwegian reports from Narvik indicate the fall of Bjornfjell station on the railway to Sweden is imminent and the Narvik garrison faces untenable conditions. With Bjornfjell fallen, supply lines from Sweden would end as Allied forces encircle the iron ore port amid Swedish defense cautions.
Postmaster C J Sartor was renominated by President Roosevelt for reappointment as Elyria postmaster. The nomination comes as Sartor’s first term, begun March 16 1936, expires. Confirmation will go to the Senate. no word of official renomination has been received.
Paris reports a steady flow of refugees into central and southern France, officially estimated at over 3 million. The influx includes many elderly and children seeking shelter, as France tolerates Spanish war refugees and German exiles while organizing immediate aid with notable efficiency.
A federal grand jury indicted twelve men from Chicago New York City Cleveland Youngstown and others on 17 counts of mail fraud and one count of conspiracy related to a nationwide front money advance fee racket. The scheme promised new capital to businesses in exchange for upfront payments. The case, under the oversight of US Attorney Emerich Freed, marks a major step in efforts to curb the fraud targeting small enterprises.
An explosion destroyed an asphalt tank track in Martins Ferry killing two workers. Stanley Hill, 34, of West Wheeling and C C McCue, 48, Martins Ferry, died yesterday during repair work on May 21.
Howard Barron an 18 year old Ridgeville High chemistry student died after an iron pipe bomb exploded in his Barron garage laboratory at 7 30 pm Elmer Dudek a neighbor and classmate witnessed the blast and described being knocked across the room Barron rushed to Elyria Memorial Hospital where he died at 4 0 pm The accident occurred as Barron prepared to test another device His mother father and brother survive and the body was sent to Gro Cicurtis Funeral Home for services by Rev Frank L Hicks First Methodist Church
Elyria City Board of Education voted not to renew C P Shively's contract as Elyria High School principal. Three members opposed renewal while two abstained, citing a two year ago understanding that the contract would not be renewed this year. Continued on Page 2.
Preparations are underway for Memorial Sunday services at Ely Park and the Capitol Theatre to honor Grand Army of the Republic veterans and all wars veterans who died in the past year. A 10 am Ely Park gathering will place wreaths on the G A R monument and World War tablet, with Don W Myers delivering a short address before processions to the Capitol Theatre for the main talk by Rev Alfred J Funnell.
Frederick C. Dechsner reports from Louvain describing panicked dogs roaming ruined streets after German bombings and shelling. He notes the fire-destroyed library with 700 000 books, extensive residential devastation, and a deserted city taken over by a German colonel.
Allied tanks are in action at the front as Germans face a new form of war with thousands of small forts. Tank crews wear leather helmets and use radios to receive orders while fighting under heat and smoke. London reports the long awaited counter attack in northern France has started and the French are fighting magnificently. British sources say isolated German tanks reached Amiens on the Somme but no major columns penetrated the area as Weygand directs Allied forces. The front is described as more confused than ever with German tanks marauding to spread alarm.
The American Red Cross announced it has sent 25,000,000 francs ($500,000) to the French Red Cross to aid 56,060 refugees and Belgian and French displaced people. Chairman Norman Davis noted an initial 5,000,000 francs ($100,000) was sent last Friday, with another 25,000,000 francs to follow in a few days.
Reports of Russian troop movements near the Bessarabia district of Romania and the Carpatho Ukraine region raise belief in Balkan capitals that Russia may intervene if the war spreads to southeastern Europe.
Paris May 21 Premier Paul Reynaud told the Senate the German offensive toward channel ports is a disaster. He blamed faults in the French army including the Meuse breakthrough and Corap’s forces for delays. He warned punishments for those responsible and said Allies may still prevail with a miracle, citing Amiens Arras Peronne and Hamm on the River No. 2.
