EPA cites 10 Edison plants for air pollution violations

The U S Environmental Protection Agency cited ten Ohio Edison plants including the Edgewater plant in Lorain for emitting 36 000 tons of fly ash annually far above the state limit of 3 900 tons The agency warned of possible orders or civil actions if compliance is not achieved within 30 days Ohio Edison negotiates on SO2 and particulates amid unclear SO2 standards and plans to avoid costly equipment until rules firm up The Lorain plant produces 175 000 kilowatts with three coal fired units and two oil units The EPA may adjust timetable as negotiations continue to page 4 column 3

Elderly viewed through classroom outreach program

In Camden at Forest Hill Elementary a two year project brings elderly citizens into third grade classes to counter stereotypes. Isadore Jenkins 68 becomes a living lesson as students 4 to 11 ask questions and, after a 90 minute interview, seek autographs. The effort led by Dr Donald Zimmerman of Glassboro State College runs with a $400000 federal grant to reshape how youth see aging and the elderly.

Inflation surges to 0.8 percent in April extending trend

The Labor Department reports April consumer prices rose 0.8 percent marking a fourth straight monthly surge driven by food and energy costs. Food prices leaped 15 percent while energy costs lifted overall inflation. Excluding food and energy, April inflation was 0.6 percent.

Kent tent city protests new Kent State gym project

Sharon Hoskins 19 and about 150 Kent State students camp on a hillside at the university to oppose a proposed 6 million physical education building. They call the site sacred in memory of the 1970 Kent State protest deaths and vow to stay until the gym annex size is changed.

Elyria Barbers Raise Prices Again to Five Dollars

The Elyria 29 member Barbers union unanimously approved a 50 cent price increase effective next month. Regular haircuts rise to five dollars with other services at nine dollars and fifty cents and four fifty for children or seniors. Saturday all regular haircuts set at five dollars. Union president Ron Madock cites rising operating costs including hospitalization. Lorain barbers may seek a 50 cent increase to three dollars for regular patients, and Cleveland barbers weighing a six dollar rate after over a year.

Two pilots die in Norwalk air crash near Zenobia Road

Two Midwest Air Charter pilots died on a training flight when their twin engined Piper Aztec crashed onto a rural road three miles south of Norwalk Ohio. Edgar L. Weidner 26 of Lebanon PA and Richard J. Simonek 4 Medina were killed instantly. The crash occurred around 11 34 p m near Zenobia Road after practice instrument approaches at Labm Airport near Mansfeld. Debris and the 15001 tail section were found in the roadway and field.
