New enzyme to cut sugar price by 1977
New enzyme that converts one sugar to another could push retail sugar to about 20 cents a pound by 1977, says Novo Enzyme Corp. director William H. McMullen. Production will be limited at first with two firms already making the liquid sugar for commercial use. Mass production may take two years. the process likely keeps high fructose corn syrup as an industrial product and frees cane sugar for consumers.
