Carter approves diluted sanctions from allies
President Carter, briefed on Edmund Muskie’s first foreign mission, approved diluted EU sanctions on Iran that cover post November 4 trade. The move trims about 8 percent of Iran’s $7 billion trade, leaves oil contracts intact, and aims to pressure Tehran while awaiting a U.N. action. Mondale warned the sanctions remain insufficient. Muskie would brief Carter on his talks with Gromyko.
