Study on why more kids run away from home than ever
Harvard expert Dr William Schmidt of the Massachusetts Committee on Children and Youth cautions that about 200000 runaways were apprehended in 1971. He cites crises of family discord, abuse and alcohol as key drivers with girls outnumbering boys two to one. Runaways risk disease due to street life and lack of services, though some shelters offer help via the National Runaway Switchboard at 800-621-4000.
