Israelis Strike Egyptian Position in Gaza Retaliation

Israeli troops crossed into Egyptian-held Gaza striking an outpost near Kissufim in retaliation for an Egyptian land mine ambush that killed three Israeli officers and wounded two. Egypt reported heavy Israeli casualties denied by Israel, while U.N. observers investigated and Egyptian forces withdrew to nearby outposts.

Vaccine Release Delay To Last Several Days

The Salk vaccine distribution program fell behind schedule as the U S Surgeon General Leonard A Scheele announced delays in releasing additional vaccine for several days. A Public Health Service spokesman said the delay stems from inspectors rechecking Wyeth Laboratories supplies at Maurietta Pennsylvania and lacking sufficient data to clear or reject them.

Nabakowski Amherst Leader Dies at 68 in Lorain Hospital

Nabakowski 68 president of A Nabakowski Co Amherst dies at St Joseph Hospital Lorain after a cere winner of Amherst Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year award. Born in Danzig he came to the U S as a child and lived in Lorain County most of life. He held many civic roles including Rotary Club Kiwanis Boy Scout Council and Masonic and Shrine memberships. Surviving wife Edna two sons Milton and James of Amherst a daughter in law and several grandchildren. Funeral services planned at Amherst churches with burial in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Lorain.

Compromise Draft Aims Civil Rights and Army Reserve

A south er Democrat Republican compromise on civil rights was offered in the House to save Eisenhower's military reserve program. Chairman Carl Vinson of the Armed Services Committee proposed a two fold plan to block Powell's segregation proposal and remove Defense Department authorization to assign reserves to National Guard units.

Elyria Bank Debits Reach New High in April

Lorain County business activity remains strong with Elyria showing a 17.8 percent April gain to 35.408 million and a first quarter total of 104.773 million, an all time high. Lorain debits total 28.866 million in April, up 16.8 percent, with first quarter 84.072 million. Elyria ranks sixth among 22 centers. Lorain tied for sixth in April. The figures reflect rising check payments and strong local demand.

Lorain County reports show extremely minimal parent withdrawals from second Salk vaccine inoculations for children. County health officials say the scattered cases are few and unverified, with two withdrawals noted in Lorain’s health department as possible aftercare from the first rounds.

Talbott Backs U S Lead In Air Power

Polio Cases Rise in Week End May 14

The Public Health Service reported 189 new polio cases in the week ended May 14, a 27 percent rise from 149 the prior week and 25 percent above the same week last year. Year-to-date polio totals reached 1,786, with 722 cases in the new disease year starting April 1.

Commerce Budget Cut $244 Million From Funds

The House Appropriations Committee slashed nearly 18 percent from the Commerce Department budget for the new fiscal year, eliminating $10,000 secretary weeks had earmarked for lunches and entertainment for visiting dignitaries. Major cuts hit highway funds, interamerican highway, airline and steamship subsidies, and shipbuilding funds, with adjustments aimed at preserving safety and meeting airport needs.

Appeal Filed On Sheppard Trial Ruling

Tugboat Sinks Off Chiba After Colliding With Freighter

A Japanese tug boat sank following a collision with the 6190 ton freighter Golden State off Chiba port. Two tug crewmen were feared lost as the coast guard identified the British registry freighter involved in the incident.

Eisenhower vetoes postal pay hike as too costly

President Eisenhower rejected a 8.48 percent postal pay increase aiming to raise wages for about 500000 workers. He argued the bill would swell the postal deficit and create inequities by carving thousands of new pay rates, urging Congress to craft a fairer plan with gradual classifications and self supporting rates. The veto follows a prior veto on a five percent raise last year. He noted the total cost would near 190 million dollars annually and stressed self sufficiency of the postal service.

Auto Trucker Crash Kills Five in Smithfield Area

Five members of two families died in a fiery wreck at a highway resurfacing site near Smithfield. A hog-transport truck rear-ended stationary cars, pushing one into a trailer ahead. Victims include Olive Branch Branch 5 and May Branch 3 of Smithfield and William Maxwell Copeland 1 with daughters Plassic Africa 9 and Gerdine Bennett 10 from North Carolina. It took about four hours to recover the bodies.
