The House accepted Senate amendments to a 773 million naval appropriation bill, funding two 45,000 ton battleships, 21 other vessels, and 500 planes. The program raises America's peacetime ship count to 144.
Col. Lynn E. Black head of the State Highway Patrol urged the House Highways committee to strike the proposed raise from 4000 to 4500 dollars. He argued economy and said he would be satisfied with his current pay. The committee unanimously amended the bill to remove the increase and recommended passage.
Sheriff Carl Finegan will address the Lorain County Cooperative Youth Council at La Grange High School at 8 PM on Monday. Darwin Bryan of the Ohio Farm Bureau educational committee will lead recreational activities. Seven members of the Lorain County Senior Four Club will present a one act play Frank and Erna. Delegates will be elected to the Recreation Leaders Conference at Camp Manatac June 12 to 16.
President Roosevelt sent to the Senate the nomination of Robert N Wilkin of New Philadelphia Ohio to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio.
Occasional showers to night and Saturday with cooler conditions in the north portion Saturday. Sunday brings more showers as a high pressure system lies over Canada north of the Great Lakes. The west experiences a strengthened low from Wyoming toward the Lake region and storms extend from the Gulf States to the northern border.
Daniel C. Roper former secretary of commerce presented his credentials in person as American Minister to Canada in Ottawa. The ceremony marked the first time an American minister to Canada delivered credentials to a British sovereign. Roper conveyed Roosevelt's friendship and wishes for Canada and noted the King’s forthcoming US visit.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the House of Commons Britain was prepared to concede for permanent peace if Germany renounces force and aggression. The vote 220 to 96 approved the policy with Germany seeking European readjustment. Berlin sources welcomed England's possible moves while Russia rejected recent British proposals.
Professor Lawrence Cole of Oberlin College psychology department will speak at the Elyria Lawyers Club noon lunch at the Graystone Hotel. His topic is "Interest on the Occult." Cole, on sabbatical last year, has conducted notable research and authored a recent psychology book.
National Guardsmen jailed three unionists in Harlan County Kentucky as troops tightened control of strike pickets in coal camps at Insull and Three Point No injuries were reported after sporadic gunfire from nearby ridges and the Harlan Central Mine at Totz reopened with no pickets allowed by Guardsmen Federal and state mediators planned to meet with Brig. Gen. Ellerbe Carter to seek a settlement as U M W contracts with U S Coal and Coke Co extended.
Mrs Mollie Sheldon of Elyria was elected president of the Woman's Home Missionary Society for the Norwalk District at the North East Ohio Conference in Wellington. Officers include V. W. Wagar Oberlin as honorary vice president and J. G. Koontz Spencer as recording secretary. The event featured 80 at the Queen Esther banquet with speakers Mrs Carl Bechberger and Miss Helen Edick.
Philadelphia May 19. Mrs Rose Carina 45 once nicknamed the kiss of death is held without bail on a charge of poisoning Pietro Stea her common law husband. Authorities seek exhumation of another former husband and will order disinterment of a third buried in a Philadelphia cemetery.
Dayton authorities report 14 year old Duane Wilt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Wilt, was killed when his bicycle collided with an automobile during a day outing. He was a high school freshman. The crash left a fractured skull.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth reach Ottawa for a two day visit to meet Parliament exam a royal assent and the color trooping ceremony. Royal guards and mounted police secure both train and passengers as crowds cheer in Montreal and along the route. The Windsor Hotel banquet on Dominion Square features Mayor Houde host and the Queen’s laughter.
The board of county commissioners refused to rent part of the Elyria Clinic Building from The Andור Mortgage Loan Co. at $100 monthly, sticking to the current $75 rate. They were told to vacate portion of Depot street space but may keep the agency in smaller quarters or seek new premises.
In Ottawa on May 19 King George VI personally gave royal assent to a Canadian Parliament bill for the first time in history, approving the Canada United States trade treaty amid the age old ritual in the Senate chamber. The nine bills, including the lake of the woods boundary waters act and the crime code amendments, were signed at Rideau Hall with Prime Minister Mackenzie King and other officials present.
The Romeo Pump Co will begin limited operations this afternoon under King Fauver the federal court receiver. About 10 of the old employees will return to work to handle present orders, with plans to add more staff later. The plant previously employed 31 mechanics four draftsmen and seven others with peak staff of 150, manufacturing fuel pumps for airplanes, as restructuring under new management is pursued.
A young schoolteacher on leave to work undercover with police helped expose a marijuana syndicate after 19 arrests for sale and possession. Her identity remains undisclosed as Lieut. Milnar notes she debunked rumors of student marijuana use during school hours and supplied valuable information.
Elyria High School students elected three new cheerleaders after tryouts during a student assembly. The winners are Wallace Harpster, Jack Leber, and Claude Martin, with Harpster and Leber to be juniors next year and Martin a senior.
Roy Murphy was found guilty by a jury in Enid Oklahoma for the murder of his brother. The jury recommended that he be electrocuted as the punishment.
Civil Service commissioners toured the Ohio penitentiary arsenal in Columbus and learned most firearms are 25 years old or more, with obsolete ammo and few gas masks. Guard Thomas Temple testified ammunition requests were often denied and no gun practice has occurred since 1935. The hearing on Warden James Woodard’s dismissal appeal was continued at the State Office Building.
President Roosevelt said he would not seek legislation based on the Securities and Exchange Commission reports and opposed any plan to spend the 2 billion stabilization fund. He planned a weekend cruise from Washington to Annapolis aboard the Yacht Potomac and would return Sunday.
Mayor's Clerk Kenneth Barclay announced that warrants will be issued tomorrow for nine motorists who have not answered parking tickets. Under the ordinance motorists have 72 hours to respond before warrant, with overtime fines rising from one to two dollars after 48 hours. Barclay has collected $24 in parking fines since Wednesday as paying agent.
