Van Sweringen Plan Rejected by ICC in Merger Push
Washington May 19 The Interstate Commerce Commission rejected the Van Sweringen plan to merge the Ers railroad with the Chesapeake and Ohio signaling a drive toward a four system consolidation by eastern trunk lines. The decision noted a need for definite merger plans for approval of any future mergers and cited a Clayton act complaint against New York Central Baltimore andOhio and Nickel Plate over Wheeling and Lake Erie stock control. Observers expect faster merger plan submissions to the Commission while Pere Marquette's approval with C and O was viewed as transportation driven. Commissioner Hastman dissented, saying the majority allowed acquisition with no clear public advantage.
