The L. C. Smith typewriter plant in Syracuse was badly wrecked by a blast this afternoon. One man is known dead with police expecting a heavy death toll. The explosion hit the top floor or next to top in the factory, sending wreckage into the street as hundreds worked inside.
Robert Crenshaw, a Lorain resident, was sentenced by Judge W B Phonpton to ten years in the Ohio penitentiary for manslaughter in the fatal craps game quarrel that left Wallace Moore dead on February 14. Crenshaw pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter instead.
John H Hahn 75 died Sunday at his son Henry Hahn’s home on East River Street. An Elyria Foundry Co employee for sixteen years he had lived in the city seventeen years. Survived by his son, wife predeceased. Funeral Tuesday at Sudro Funeral Home at 2 PM, Rev Paul Bourquin officiating. Burial Ridgelawn Cemetery.
Vienna reports authorities crackdown on fortune telling as a pest in large cities. Twenty two prisoners, including aristocratic women, were brought to court in Budapest charged with overcharging for a legal occupation. They wept as dramatic confessions revealed high charges pressed by women.
D J Cable father of Representative John L Cable, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, died in Lima Ohio after a kidney illness. He was a leading attorney and financier. Funeral services set for Tuesday. Also reported a collision near Mannington West Virginia in which Jeane Petres aged 22 was killed and her father and mother injured.
Reported May 1 describes three American round the world planes nearing Minato near Tokyo ahead of French ace Lieut D'Oisy. They landed earlier at Hittokapu after departing Paramasura, with cheers from crews of the Pope and allied ships aboard. D'Oisy, arriving Canton, plans Pekin push after heat woes across India.
J M Starr a 60 year old banker and business man of LaGrange died suddenly Saturday night at home from a stroke while preparing to retire. A lifelong Penfield and LaGrange resident he was president of The Peoples Bank. Survived by wife daughter Frances Woodruff and grandson Starr Kent Woodruff. Funeral Tuesday at two at his home with burial at Penfield cemetery.
Fred Ross, 205 Middle Avenue, was rushed to the emergency room after a ball collision during play knocked him down and stepped on his leg. An X ray showed a damaged right leg. Robert Mullucks, 11826 Cromwell Street, visiting with his parents, cut his upper lip when a cup he held broke on the table.
City council to review a proposed traffic ordinance from the Young Men's Business Club after consultations with local clubs. The measure bans under thirteen from operating vehicles, sets speed limits of 15 mph in congested areas and 25 mph elsewhere, and prohibits overlong store parking without a signs. It also envisions stricter school and playground rules with time limits.
A probate judge consulted on insanity warrants for an Oberlin man said to act queerly. The man had two prior arrests, one leading to Toledo asylum. An entry by Judge W. Uinman joked that the patient was not insane but suffering from too much whiskey and ordered confinement to dry out.
Mrs. Joe Mikewich aged 21 of 125 Kaiser Court died Sunday morning at 6 29 at Memorial Hospital where she had been brought on May 4 for treatment.
Dr Chao Hua Wu, son of Wu Ting Fang and former US ambassador, has been named political successor to the late South China leader Sun Yat Sen. The move reflects an old Chinese custom of bequeathing a political will.

Flames at the federal shipbuilding plant in Kearney New Jersey were brought under control after hours of danger. Loss pegged at 1.8 million dollars as acetylene tanks exploded. In West St Paul Minnesota the Craig Oil Refining Company fire sent burning barrels high into the air, halting firefighting and hindering search for two missing men.
Eva M. Copas filed divorce proceedings against Hiram Copas on nth street alleging gross neglect of duty and extreme cruelty. She says she supported the family, suffered verbal abuse, threats of bodily harm, and seeks divorce, permanent alimony, custody of three children, and an injunction to stop him from interfering with her occupancy of their home.
Lorain Street Railways Company petitions the Ohio Supreme Court claiming State Utilities Commission violated its franchise by issuing public convenience certificates enabling seven bus operators in Lorain. The company says it agreed to extension only if buses did not compete with street cars. Also, J A Trory fined $25 for overloaded truck in Liberty Highway case.
George T Barner and Rosamond Barner, Cleveland residents, face a divorce trial before Judge W H Thompson in court room No 2. The case was transferred from Cuyahoga County after Mrs Barner filed an affidavit claiming unfair proceedings. An alimony agreement, not public, was reached this morning before the divorce hearing began. The wife testified extensively, challenging courtroom authority and revealing many details.
Frank Rose aged 31 died Sunday at 6:00 AM at his home 625 Lodi street after seven weeks of illness. He leaves a wife and two children. Funeral from St Agnes Church Wednesday at 9:00 AM with burial in St Marys Cemetery. Also noted is infant son of Mr and Mrs Robert Foster 104 Mendelcourt who died Saturday morning and was buried Saturday afternoon at Ridgestown Cemetery from Sudro Funeral Home.
Four-year-old William Patrick Young, son of Mr and Mrs W J Young of 331 West 9th St, died after a tractor driven by his father ran over him following a ride request. He was pronounced dead at 9 30 pm after being taken to the hospital. Funeral services will be held at St Marys church Tuesday at 3 pm.
Columbus May 19 police arrested Grace Dolby 31 a private detective on charges of killing George Hackney by throwing carbolic acid at him during a motion picture. Police say motive involved jealousy and love. Dolby admits affection for Hackney and claims she could not live without him. Detective Dolby is held for investigation after a tip from Hackney's child Rose 9 about marriage jealousy.
President Calvin Coolidge, weakened by a cold last week, cancelled all engagements and retired to his White House room. Doctors say his condition is not serious and advise him to take it easy. A straw stack fire on the Schaible farm at Weat Ridge threatened nearby buildings but was kept under control with minimal losses.
London reports a Liverpool Hospital team grafted two eyelids onto a California man using skin from his arm. Eyelashes are sprouting and the patient can blink and close his eyes normally, though his identity remains undisclosed.
Washington May 19 The five year struggle to grant a World War II veteran bonus ends as the Senate passes the soldiers bonus bill over President Coolidge's veto by 49 to 26. The plan rewards service with paid up life insurance worth about 900 to 1000 dollars per veteran, with cash value after two years and cash exchange at twenty years. The bill carried despite opposition, amid crowded galleries and applause from supporters.
City bus lines update departures from Cleveland Elyria Toledo and routes to Oberlin Kipton Wakeman and Norwalk plus Red Star Elyria timetable. Elyria departures start 6 45 am with frequent half hour to six pm then hourly to ten pm. Cleveland cars run every half hour from seven pm to eight thirty pm and some later trains on FH & O line listed.
