Bulls Hold Key to Dairy Gains at Beltsville Herd

In 1938 the 33 cows yielded 683 pounds of butterfat. by 1946 this rose to 892 pounds, attributed entirely to proved bulls. Ohio dairy losses: loafing cows pull down milk averages

In Ohio 1947 average milk per cow barely exceeded 5 009 pounds for 12 months. Dairy experts say many herds produce under 4 000 pounds due to loafing. Prices show 4 000 pound herds earned about 1 735 dollars per cow, while 12 000 pound herds earned about 320 dollars more. Experts urge herd improvement via better cows and artificial insemination associations to raise genetic potential and milk yields.
