Paris reports thousands of French 75s rushed to the Meuse Salient to strike at German mechanized columns at point blank range. Tanks and infantry defend Paris region as battles rage along the Sedan Rethel Moncornet front with heavy air and artillery activity.
Weather forecast for Ohio and nearby areas shows cloudy skies with showers Sunday. Tonight a western and southern tendency of showers, warmer in the south and central portions, cooler in the northwest. Last 24 hours notes a southwestern disturbance centered over Oklahoma extending into the Mississippi valley, with highs north of the Rockies and another high over the Ohio valley.
Royal Air Force squadrons bombed German bases and supply lines in France and Belgium during the night. The air ministry said RAF forces defended their lines in the Meuse Salient and attacked key military objectives in western Germany on a very heavy scale with no aircraft reported lost.

London May 18 British military quarters said the German push on the French front had slackened though possibly temporarily exhaustion in German units was evident and the situation remained serious General Henri Giraud took command of the main part of the Battle of the Bulge South of the River Sambre British circles said Germans had released over half their tank forces in the battle but only slight progress was noted near Avesnes with more in Hirson Montmedy line at Maginot strong still denied by experts and the northern Anglo Belgian line withdrawn to align with allied moves
National Tube Company in Lorain plans a $1.5 million blast furnace to replace No 3 furnace inactive since February. The U S Steel approval caps 1,100 ton daily capacity, replacing 650 tons. Site to be No 3 location. construction start date not set. A new $400,000 sintering plant foundation is under way this Spring.

Berlin reports Germany has captured the Belgian port of Antwerp after a major breakthrough from the River Oise to Sedan. The Wehrmacht says its southern army is within 100 miles of Paris and that its war flag now flies over Antwerp city hall.
Paris May 18 84 year old Marshal Henri Philippe Petain recalled to duty as France reorganizes its cabinet and uses Petain to lead a desperate drive against German forces sweeping through Belgium and into northern France. Official reports claim the Nazi thrusts against Paris and channel ports were checked briefly while Petain returns to a key role alongside Reynaud Mandel and Rollin.
Shirley Tarry four daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin Tarry of Lake avenue was in Elyria Memorial Hospital with contusions and a possible skull fracture after she fell from her father s car on Western avenue in Lakewood. The rear door opened as the car traveled about 30 miles per hour and she was first treated at Lakewood hospital before transfer.

Oberlin College pre med student Peter B Auerbach 19 of White Plains N Y received a hearing on a traffic manslaughter charge after the death of Miss Inah E Avery 82 struck by his car at West avenue and Third street during a return to Oberlin Auerbach had a lengthy preliminary hearing with testimony from several witnesses The mayor Joseph Q Petro gave his attorney until Thursday to file a brief and Solicitor Richard Horan until Monday to respond Auerbach has not attended school since the accident.
The Dutch freighter Prins Willem U W docked in Cleveland Harbor as officials inspected the ship. Captain Chris Vanderyke asserted Dutch sovereignty and refused to bow to German pressure while crew members feared for family back in the Netherlands amid the blitzkrieg.
