Tragic Madrid Dancer killed by lover in New York studio
In New York on May 17, Spanish dancer Maria Montero was shot by Horatio Colombres, 12 hours later dying in Welfare Island prison hospital. Colombres, an Argentine heir, shot himself after the tragedy. The couple had shared an apartment and clashed over his concealed wife and children in Paris. Montero had toured Europe and Broadway, and wore a mantilla gifted by King Alfonso during her career. Colombres had threatened her by telephone and reportedly beat her during their relationship.
