Banquet reveals gender gap in Lorain County Sheriff Council

Trustee's son to head hospital in New London

Larry Plants 27 son of hospital board president named administrator of New London Hospital. He holds a bachelor in business from University of Dayton and plans an MBA in hospital administration at Bowling Green State University. He previously worked in Dayton area marketing and management. The board has seen multiple resignations and upcoming appointments by township trustees and the medical services group. The hospital lost Medicare Medicaid certification in 1980 and seeks recertification in 3 to 4 months with a Chicago firm. Faymore, landlord and former staff, owned 4 percent until February and is not involved in hospital operations.

Bus Crash On Washington Avenue Leaves Children and Driver Injured

A yellow Head Start bus carrying 23 preschoolers collided with a car at Ninth Street, splintering the windshield and pushing the dashboard toward the front. Most pupils escaped unharmed, but four year old Arikka Calloway suffered critical injuries from an object impaling her body. driver Cornelia Rice was found unconscious on a lawn, later confirmed injured. Witnesses and responders aided evacuation as sirens wailed and bystanders battled an oil fire. Local officials and Candy Atkinson described a tense scene and expressed relief at the overall limited injuries.

Fifth in two weeks injury hits local motorcycle crash

A 17 year old Elyria rider, Brian Tibbitts, was severely cut when his motorcycle collided with a car driven by Catherine Valentine on Abbe Road at Antioch Drive. Tibbitts, from 32721 Carriage Lane, is in fair condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital. This marks the county's fifth serious motorcycle accident in two weeks.

Kenney wins top color photo in journalism awards

Chief Photographer John Kenney wins the 1982 Northeastern Ohio Excellence in Journalism color photo prize for a Bay Village artist Lawrence Blazey and one of his surreal paintings published last March. He shares the award with Jim Fielder of The Cleveland Press as THE PRESS earns top honors in six categories while The Plain Dealer takes nine first place awards.
