McCarthy backs McClellan demand for Ike aides to testify
Senate leader McCarthy supported Senator McClellan's call for five of President Eisenhower's top advisers to testify at the Army McCarthy hearings. Dirksen was cool to the proposal and the administration's officials faced possible subpoenas as the affair spurred upheaval before the weekend recess. Eisenhower urged faith in America's soundness despite unworthy scenes in the national capital. McClellan pressed to cross examine on the January meeting at the Justice Department with Brownell Rogers Lodge Adams. Adams said higher ups ordered silence. Welch noted the order came from Deputy Defense Secretary Anderson.

Chessman, 32, was condemned in 1945 on 17 counts of kidnapping robbery and rape under California’s Little Lindbergh Law. He denied being the Red Light Bandit and offered lie detector tests.
