Man uncovers 15 million year old petrified forest find
Clyde Friend, a 50-year-old bulldozer operator living off the Yakima hills, unearthed upright petrified woods from about 15 million years ago. Experts say the Miocene forest remained standing as lava flowed, preserving trunks and logs now drawing collectors and scientists for study.

Petrified Wood Facts From Washington Forests
Washington hosts many petrified wood deposits formed when submerged timber was buried by lava, preventing decay and burning. Sufficient lava silica replaced the wood with agate opal and quartz, preserving cellular structure in forests like Umtanum Ginkgo and Saddle Mountain dating 14.5 to 15.6 million years old.
