Both sides active in prohibition controversy in Washington
Washington May 13 Both sides in the prohibition controversy are becoming active as President Hoover prepares to appoint a law enforcement commission within two weeks. The anti prohibition association claims the cost to taxpayers is about 936 million dollars annually including lost excise revenue. Bishop James Cannon Jr says Hoover should include non lawyers and avoid restricting the panel to prohibition partisans. White House reports indicate Hoover aims for general law enforcement emphasis and a special probe into enforcing the eighteenth amendment, though Justice Harlan Stone reportedly declined service.
