Israeli tanks sweep into southern Lebanon amid multi nation clashes

Israeli forces with about 100 tanks and 1000 infantry pushed into south eastern Lebanon to hit guerrilla bases. Air battles raged as Israel claimed three Syrian MIG17s shot down. Iraqi artillery opened fire from Jordan and Syria fought back. Lebanon and Israel called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting as the clash escalated.

Lubbock Tornado Devastates City Killing Dozens

A violent tornado tore eight miles through Lubbock Texas causing extensive damage and killing at least 26 people with as many as 1,000 injured. The storm knocked out electricity flooded streets and damaged the Great Plains Life Building near Texas Tech University as the city mobilized a disaster response and National Guard.

Firebomb Strikes Ohio University Cafeteria

A firebomb hurled into Nelson Commons Dining Hall at Ohio University caused about 120000 in damage. Athens Fire Chief Dalton said a molotov type device started the blaze, damaging construction materials nearby. The incident follows two other campus arson events within a week as President Sowle vows to keep campus open amid protests.

Vivid Witnesses Testify to Thomas Threats Before Killing

Two Elyrian witnesses testified that Stanley Thomas 21 of 1159 Garden Street said he would empty his gun on Terry Lee White before the stabbing death. James Jones and his wife Laura said Thomas made the threat a week earlier and two days prior, as Thomas walked them home from his residence, accusing White of seeing his wife Gail. The testimony aimed to prove premeditation for first degree murder in the Oct. 31 incident at New Center parking lot.

Ujhelyi Named Lorain School Clerk Treasurer

Antone Ujhelyi city auditor will become the Lorain public schools clerk treasurer on July 1 to fill the term of Ernest Sposato whose resignation takes effect June 3. Ujhelyi, age 60, said he had considered leaving his editor post for over a year and applied when the board advertised. The appointment was made last night after deliberation by the school board.

Oberlin police chief and sergeant suspended in confrontation probe

Police Chief Robert K. Ferber and Sergeant Eugene Barlow of Oberlin were suspended for one week pending investigation into a Friday night incident with Negro youths at South Main and Groveland Streets. City Manager Edward C. Smith announced the action after an executive session.

Court to study sheriff's use of prisoner labor at farm

Lorain County Common Pleas Court will study the sheriff Vernon M Smiths practice of employing county jail prisoners on his 23 acre Kipton Nickel Pilate Road farm and at department prisons.
