Irving Berlin marks his 90th birthday in Manhattan as he plinks a piano and predicts little celebration. In Lorain officials seek contempt findings against striking firefighters in common pleas court, with potential jail or fines if Judge Mikus rules against them. Only four firefighters work in Lorain, population about 88,000, while Elyria firemen also negotiate with the city. The Ferguson Act looms as a possible immediate firing of strikers, with city council directing a contempt filing and a May 19 return-to-work deadline set. Page 4 continues.
Kaminski, owner of Kaminski Oldsmobile Cadillac in Lorain for 21 years, plans to acquire Deetz Mercedes Ford dealership in Elyria and merge operations. He expects completion within days and contemplates a new 30 acre showroom at the northwest corner of Routes 2 and 254 in Sheffield Village, pending approvals. Lawrence Deetz, running 728 W Broad St since 1938, could not comment.

Mayor Dennis J. Kucinich filed formal election fraud charges against Jean A. Brisbine the head petition circulator for recalling the mayor with Cuyahoga County officials. He cited sworn statements from seven signers claiming Brisbine did not circulate all signatures and noted Ohio law requires a circulator to witness each signature.
Ronald Patterson 19 testifies he found Mrs. Martha Kitchel at his home on February eight. He says she picked up a knife by the sink and cut him while he avoided contact, countering police statements. He faces aggravated murder and aggravated robbery charges in the North Ridgeville woman’s stabbing death.
The Kiplinger Washington Letter reports that through today May 1 the average taxpayer has been working 131 days to pay federal state and local tax bills. Starting Friday money earned becomes yours as the government pockets shrink.
Avon civic and business leaders heard two new factory projects totaling over $1 million will be built north of Chester Road on Rt 83. National Electro Coatings Inc will add 25,000 square feet manufacturing and 4,000 square feet office space, with possible solar heating if federal aid covers 75 percent of the cost. VanSickle Industries follows with a 450,000 building also for manufacturing and offices. Both include future sewage-treatment facilities tied to a city sewer system.
Curtis Andrews of the Department of Transportation rejects claims that 11 public information specialists were hired to do political work. He cites Ralph Nuzum of Athens and says none were ordered to use state time or vehicles for campaigns. Nuzum and others are accused of fundraising for Gov. Rhodes, with Roy Martin reportedly approving the hires.
