Flag Desecration Debates Rock State and National Policy
High court outlook looms as debate over flag desecration rises amid protests and calls to revise the flag code. Civil libertarians push for First Amendment protections while lawmakers seek clearer limits and tougher penalties. The case of Stephen Radich prompts states to await Supreme Court guidance on symbolic speech and flag misuse.

Air Force plans better radar warning controls
In Bedford Massachusetts Brig General Kendall Russell unveiled a 4000 pound 30 foot test aircraft mounted AWACS radar warning system on a Boeing 707 to enhance airborne warning and control. He said AWACS would expand U S surveillance and serve as a flexible airborne command post with 43 planes planned by 1976 at 22 million each. It excels at tracking low level objects over varied terrain from high altitude but cannot track intercontinental missiles once reentry occurs. He argued AWACS would aid in Vietnam era combat by hinting at preventing MIG surprise attacks and detecting surface to air missiles and would function as all weather command post coordinating ground sea and air actions.
