4000 Personnel Changes In State Highway Dept
Columbus, May 10 UPI reports 4000 personnel changes in the state highway department over the past five months. Highway Director Robert S. Beightler notes most affected are laborers, truck drivers, and tractor operators across 12 division offices. He says several hundred positions were abolished for economy and at least 100 from the classified service were removed. Beightler, appointed in January, began payroll cuts and has instructed engineers to keep only essential construction and maintenance crews. He criticizes the prior administration for large maintenance payrolls during the 1938 August primary period, citing Clark County with 443 men on the payroll Aug 1–15, 1938 versus a 1934–1937 average of 49.
