Insull seeks bail as friends raise $200000 in Chicago
In Chicago on May 9, friends rallied to raise 200000 to bail Samuel Insull, the former utilities magnate, from jail. His son Samuel Insull Jr. faced discouragement as attorney Floyd E. Thompson prepared an appeal to the U.S. Circuit Court for a bail reduction after District Judge Barnes set high bail. Insull, 74, once worth 165 million and leader of a three billion dollar system, awaited trial while plotting a Greece oriented comeback to dominate regional trade and industry, with plans discussed during his extradition and imprisonment. He spoke from the freighter Exilena on return to America, outlining hopes for vindication and a future Greek utility empire guided by foreign financiers, and noted a controversial strategy exploiting Greece’s coal and water resources. His weakened condition allowed special jail meals costing under 50 cents a day, while his son brought him lamb chops and coffee.

Old Age Pensions May Be Delayed
County commissioners fear pension payments due July 1 may be postponed due to a muddled state tax situation. State Welfare Department reports indicate the $390,000 pension appropriation is not in sight and relief for administration and payments is unlikely. In Lorain County, £900 is allotted for pension administration this year, covering investigation, supplies, postage and printing, deemed inadequate. About 12,000 county residents may apply, with perhaps half eligible, and officials say application blanks have not yet been received.

Truck Drier On Stand To Unfold Crash Details
Earl Kirkpatrick driver of the Three C truck Toto testified in the Norwalk manslaughter trial of A W Schaffer that the bus was speeding about 35 mph when it swerved from behind a parked Norwalk truck. He moved toward the ditch to clear the bus, placed warning lights, and hung a red lantern on the rear of the parked truck to alert others. He aroused Schaffer, smelled liquor on his breath, and noted the bus lights appeared aimed about 36 feet ahead. A second witness, William Bowers, said the bus passed moments before the crash and swerved to avoid the parked truck, sideswiping the tailgate before hitting the Three C truck. Deputy Adams identified photos and a scene measurement blueprint at the hearing.
