Pipe bomb suspect arrested after nationwide manhunt
Luke Helder a Pine Island Minnesota college student was charged after a five state string of mailbox pipe bombs. He was captured after dropping a gun from his car on a windswept highway during a nationwide manhunt that stretched across half the country. A bomb squad was called to check the car as he was stopped more than 1500 miles from Illinois where early bombs and notes were found. The spree alarmed rural Americans raising mail safety worries following last fall's anthrax case. A motorist on Interstate 80 spotted Helder and pulled him over after a 40 mile chase at 100 mph. FBI negotiations followed before authorities backed off.
