Fire on USS Conyngham Leaves One Dead and Dozens Aboard
A fire aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Conyngham 80 miles off North Carolina killed one crew member and wounded at least nine. Five with serious injuries were evacuated, three to USS Normandy, two to shore. The 437-foot ship, commissioned in 1963, moved to port under its own power after the blaze began in the engineering area at 9:35 a.m. The cause was unknown and fire was being fought as security of magazines was emphasized. The ship had about 360 crew aboard during routine operations. Four crew were court-martialed in 1988 over a related matter.
