First Steps Toward Segoe Plan Traffic Changes

The city council referred traffic planning to a committee at the request of Service Director D W Kothe. Proposed work includes widening East Avenue between Second and Fourth streets and other street widenings at Second Cedar and Third near Fast Avenue, estimated at about 20 900 dollars. The plan aims to convert Second and Third streets to one way to ease downtown congestion.

Allied push in Korea advances as UN forces breach front

Allied troops smashed 114 miles along the western Korean front aided by South Korean spearheads reaching 138 miles north west of Seoul. UN forces press advances across the 38th parallel while Fifth Air Force strikes red forces sending enemy reinforcements toward the front. General Van Fleet said US forces are fit and confident as the offensive continues amid reports of Communist withdrawals and a second push toward the central and eastern fronts.

Bus Terminal Planned on Second Street by Alten Property

Uncertainty over shifting the bus terminal from Court Street to Alfred Alten’s property at 354 Second Street ended with Alten’s announcement that all bus companies agreed to the change effective July. Council unanimously approved, and construction will begin, costing about 15000 dollars for a 35 by 69 foot one story masonry terminal with rest and lunch rooms and a tobacco store operated by two of Alten’s sons.

Four Shoplifters Fined By Mayor In Cleveland

Four Clevelanders arrested March 3 on shoplifting charges were fined 100 dollars plus costs by Mayor Henry W. Ault. The four named defendants include Geraldine Johnson alias Hattie Smith 27 Catherine Johnson 24 Olivia Dunlap alias Rosetta White 30 and William Cloud 30. They were accused of stealing women s clothing valued at 151 dollars from the Georgia Huntington dress shop.

Citizen Protest After Elyria Telephone Rate Increase

Council members heard criticism from resident Harry Nottley about the Elyria Telephone Company rate hike. Nottley said two other firms showed interest in serving Elyria, while Solicitor Richard Baird doubted the FCC would permit dual providers in one city. Major Henrie W. Youth Suffered Gun Shot Wound in Accidental Discharge

Lester Leiby 16, of 238 Kelly Street, Wellington, was treated at Allen Memorial hospital Oberlin after a gun fired accidentally while a friend loaded it at Wellington airport. The bullet pierced his foot, required removal, and a cast was applied. He is a Wellington High School ninth grader.

Marshall resumes testimony on Soviet troop concentrations near Korea

Defense Secretary George C. Marshall said the Soviet forces are massed near Vladivostok and other Manchurian areas with possible Japanese inmate groups nearby. He warned it would be very serious if the Soviets entered the Korean war and noted MacArthur was ordered to keep troops and naval units away from Soviet Siberia and northern Korea.

Contracts Awarded For Resurfacing

A Columbus message reports that resurfacing contracts were awarded to the Ohio Engineering Co of Lorain by state departments. One project covers 1120 S of Route 6 in Lorain County at a cost of 36683 dollars. Another covers 2143 miles of Route 113 and design of Route 20 in Lorain County at 12298 dollars.

Council Studies Requests For Pay Increases

The grievance committee reviews mid year pay raises for police and fire departments but has not decided. The committee may not favor mid year increases.
