Bears and wolves haunt early Elyria settlers tales

In the 1830s to 1840s Elyria’s settlers hunted bears and wolves that roamed the woods and village. Bears attacked pigs, a man felled an old bear and cubs from Middle avenue, wolves pursued locals, and a lone wolf fought town dogs until hunters killed it in Huron county. Deer and turkeys were common, with migratory squirrel flocks and tails used to win oyster suppers.

Spite Fence Sparks Dispute on East River Street

In Elyria residents on East River Street argue over a high solid board fence built between the properties of L. E. Thaxton and George Barr at 705 and 709 East River Street. Barr says the fence blocks his ice cream stand and harms his business. Thaxton says the fence serves privacy and denies rumors. City officials say they cannot act without clear ordinance guidance as residents debate whether the structure is a billboard or a spite fence.
