Elyria Mayor Bill Grace unveiled a plan to place a tax measure on the November ballot to boost the Police Department from 9.8 million to over 12 million dollars. Police Chief Duane Whitely joined Grace at the news conference as critics questioned allocating more than half of the general fund to policing.
Lorain City Schools announced 183 positions were identified for elimination after retirements and attrition, with 220 positions initially cut and 37 restored. The district stressed notifications precede board action, and Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson praised the staff as dedicated and caring. Employment NetWork will assist affected workers.
A computer glitch or typo sparked a rapid Dow Jones decline of nearly 1000 points in under 30 minutes marking the largest intraday drop in history. Markets rebounded later as trading stabilized.
A mother Lisa Blair and her three children Molly 8 Law son 4 and 18 month old Kelly escaped a fire that destroyed the garage and damaged the brick ranch home on Julia Ave 1800 block. Firefighters from Avon Avon Lake North Ridgeville Sheffield and Sheffield Lake contained the blaze with the garage a total loss and Tim Blair estimating about 10000 in yard care gear lost.
Ohio officials will pause the Vermilion River scenic designation and restart the process. ODNR Director Sean Logan says all parties will be heard as the department reconsiders designating a 25%-mile river stretch and seeks separate resolutions from townships and villages. Residents fear the plan would create 1000 foot corridors and potential land takings through eminent domain.
TV Week will stop listing VCR Plus codes later this month as contracts with the vendor end May 23. Codes remain available through 2010 at vcrplus.com, per staff reports.
