President Bush expressed sorrow for the abuse and humiliation of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers. He said the mistreatment made Americans sick to their stomachs and pledged accountability.
Major League Baseball scrapped ads on bases in its Spider-Man 2 marketing deal after fans reacted negatively. Chief operating officer Bob DuPuy said the bases were only a small part of the program and the promotion was revised.
Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan warned deficits threaten the nation's economic stability and raised concerns about financing Social Security and Medicare. He said a day of reckoning will come with no free lunch and urged reforms in the presidential campaign.
Elyria police Sgt. Lynn Robinson acted during Tuesday's crossfire in the citys longest standoff. Chief Michael Medders recommends the Award for Valor for saving a life under fire. Robinson declined the award saying he merely did his job while a woman shot in the arm was helped to safety.
Police and Children Services workers faced a 30 hour standoff with Anthony Horton at East 14th Street as officers sought to serve an arrest warrant and remove two children. Horton fired at SWAT members and threatened officers while negotiations continued. The scene involved multiple agencies including the FBI with officers cordoning off Middle Avenue and guiding nearby residents to safety.
Leslie Nemenz, 28, lay in EMH Regional Medical Center after a scuffle that left her ankle broken and led to a standoff at an East 14th Street home. Her two children remained inside as Anthony Horton fired at police, injuring Nemenz’s mother Cheryl Tweedie before authorities secured the scene. Nemenz has only briefly seen her 5‑month‑old Ridge, while 7‑year‑old Joshua and 3‑year‑old Shyann remain apart from her as Lorain County Children Services handles custody details.
