Local authorities and state deputies sealed and boarded up Favem property amid an ongoing drug activity investigation. Officials cited alleged trafficking connections and possible public safety concerns as the motive for the action.
Sheffield Lake Third Ward Councilman John Piskura led Tuesday’s primary with 957 votes, but second place between Richard Rosso and Gary Mingee was decided by a razor-thin margin. Provisional ballots to be added May 19 could trigger a recount if the gap is half a percent or less.
Amherst mayoral incumbent John G. Higgins won the Democratic primary with 61.3 percent of the vote, 1,003 to 633 for Kathleen M Litkovitz, signaling strong support as he plans to stay in office. Republican David A. Taylor, unopposed, claimed 550 votes and eyed the November general election.
North Ridgeville vote totals show Dave Gillock defeating Tom Dake and Rosemary Berg. Gillock secured 1,052 votes for 47 percent, Dake 887 for 40 percent, Berg 293 for 13 percent, advancing to face Democrat Jim Johnson in November. Dake praised the campaign as he exited the party gathering.
Lorain failed its temporary 0.125 percent income tax measure by 466 votes 5024 to 4558. City faces a widening deficit near 4 million with layoffs already made police and firefighters kept but further cuts and hiring freezes expected as state oversight looms.
Avon Lake voters approved Issue 31 to replace Yea and Nay with Yes and No on ballots. About 2,600 cast votes (87 percent) for the change, while 385 chose to keep the historic terms.
