Greenpeace and Ross Clash Over Hazardous Waste Plans
Greenpeace contends industry will not cut waste outputs even as communities suffer. New man criticizes Ross despite donations to the school system, while residents debate doubling the kiln to nearly 40 feet and adding 349 new waste classifications. Brenda Tollett supports the kiln after being told it would burn waste hotter and more completely. Ross officials claim about 40,000 tons of toxic waste are burned yearly to prevent pollution elsewhere, and Ross’s CEO argues incineration is a safe, EPA recognized method with ash reduced to 5 to 10 percent of original volume. Greenpeace and Ross avoided direct contact at separate press conferences.
