Elyria agrees to EPA access for quarry Superfund testing
Elyria granted federal access to the old Republic Steel quarry ending an eight month dispute over contamination testing under Superfund rules. The city faces potential court fines and argues private testing could cost less than the EPA’s $400,000 estimate. Mayor Keys says the move speeds assessment of toxic metals and public health risk.

Cascade Pool may close permanently this summer
Elyria officials warn Cascade Pool likely to shut this summer and possibly permanently due to severe decay and a defective filtration system. The 63 year old facility near Cascade Park has flood damage and aging structure, with mayor Keys noting low attendance as a key factor. The closing would come during a 3.3 million dollar park renovation that excludes Cascade Pool for cost reasons.
