Muskie seen poised for Senate OK to be secretary of state
In Washington, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set to swiftly back Edmund Muskie for the 58th secretary of state. The Maine senator, Carter’s pick to replace Cyrus Vance, is expected to sail through confirmation hearings and likely receive full Senate approval before week’s end. Muskie plans his first diplomatic mission to Europe to meet NATO allies and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, then attend the 25th anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty in Vienna.
