Vulture Barney Acts as Unexpected Mother at Cincinnati Zoo
At the Cincinnati Zoo a male vulture named Barney has become a surrogate parent to two ducklings after officials placed eggs with him as an experiment. Barney hatched one duckling and adopted a second, guarding both as if offspring. A prior mating produced the zoo’s only yellow-headed vulture chick last year.

Vermilion Township slaying Gornek found guilty of manslaughter
In Erie County, James J. Gornek, 29, of Darrow Road Vermilion Township, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the New Year’s Eve shooting death of Vincent Wiencke. After seven hours and five hours of deliberations, the jury returned the lesser verdict around 3 p.m. Gornek remains free on bond as pre sentence reports are prepared. He had previously failed to reach a verdict on murder at a prior trial. The court informed sentencing will follow the pre sentence report. possible penalties include four to 25 years in prison and a fine up to ten thousand dollars.
