Arson investigators and Sheffield Township fire crews combed the damaged Clearview High School after a fire swept five classrooms and offices. Estimated damage ranges from 100000 to 500000 dollars. a morning disturbance by 20 to 25 suspended Negro students preceded the blaze. The gym and cafeteria of Darling Elementary were used to handle overflow as authorities question the students.
Elyria residents vote down four operating levies with only Precinct 1-A approving. Levies failed across 61 precincts with 2-1 to 4-1 margins, totaling 7.3 mills aimed at replacing the rejected city income tax proposal defeated twice.
A wrecking crew from Buehs and Son of Oberlin will tear down the 1886 Lake Theater site on Broad Street after a general alarm fire. Safety director Tracey cited danger from wind, rain, or train vibrations and noted an emergency destruction order to remove the unsafe structure. Witnesses say Clearview Board of Education member David Cramer slapped Mrs. Kathleen Schuster as she intervened with a camera during the Clearview High School fire. Cramer, a professional photographer, says he blade reflexively struck after she shoved the camera. Schuster denies touching the camera and says she blocked the lens. Her son Dennis, 18, reportedly joined in the chaotic scene.
