Search for bodies in Hindenburg ruins at Lakehurst

Survivors and guards combed the blackened wreckage of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst for additional bodies. Naval officer Lieut. George Watson doubted finds would occur, noting most remains could have been consumed by the fire. Motors lay buried along the east side near the hangar as water tanks survived, while fuel tanks had vanished and the burning nose left a cratered mass.

Disaster as Real Blow to Dirigible Program

Washington May 7 high Army and Navy officials say the Hindenburg disaster ends hopes for reviving lighter-than-air craft in U S military and naval services. They note US experimentation yielded many deaths, few remaining airships, and expect minimal impact on future airship programs.

Generally fair tonight and Saturday with little temperature change. High pressure dominates the Great Lakes Central Valleys Alberta and Montana while low pressure remains off Cape Hatteras Manitoba and the Washington coast. Rain fell in New England yesterday with light showers in the Ohio Valley and Western Plains and Rockies. Temperatures rose in Ohio Gulf states and Plains while the lower lakes Canadian Northwest and Southwest cooled slightly.

Germans Mourn Loss But Will Carry On

Berlin May 7 An official investigating commission started for New York today as Germans mourn the loss of their dirigible Hindenburg and pledge to keep their flag flying on new airships. Representatives of the air ministry, the Air Research Bureau and Zeppelin left for Bremerhaven to sail for New York aboard the Europa. Dr Hugo Eckener heads to Berlin then Cherbourg to join the commission. Meanwhile a new dirigible LZ 150 is promised for transatlantic service.

Wellington School Teachers Salary Increase Approved

Wellington school board approved a second pay raise for teachers earning below the regular schedule and lifted elementary salaries from $500 to $550. The measure affects 17 teachers and adds about $1,500 to the year’s payroll, contingent on rehiring for next year. The 1957 58 budget rises by roughly $2,281.25, and a part time art teacher will be hired.

Witnesses Recall Flaming Dirigible Tragedy Nightmare

Lakehurst New Jersey May 1 Witnesses described the Hindenburg disaster as a horrible nightmare, watching the flaming hulk fall with screams of trapped victims. William Von Messier Zeppelin Company vice president and Harry A Bruro press agent stood under the ship as it settled near the ground.

Hindenburg Disaster At Lakehurst Leaves Dozens Missing

The Hindenburg burnt and crashed at Lakehurst New Jersey as it attempted to land after a transatlantic flight. Officials reported 32 known dead or missing from 97 aboard while 66 were listed as alive.
