New Drug Combo Extends Survival in Advanced Stomach Cancer
Georgetown University researchers report that a trio of anticancer drugs (adriamycin, 5 fluorouracil, mitomycin) given over an eight week cycle produced responses in 10 of 21 patients with advanced stomach cancer. Some patients lived more than three times longer than with prior therapy, with several surviving nine to fifteen months. The study suggests potential benefits in early disease and ongoing larger trials. Stomach cancer remains a leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. with about 14,400 expected deaths and 22,900 new cases this year.
