Morton A. Houghton, county relief director, announces a marked relief reduction since late March with about 1,000 families removed. Lorain saw over 509 off relief, Elyria expected 15 percent drop, Russia township 30 percent, Wellington 22 percent, statewide trend toward fewer relief cases. April relief funds totaling 19,482 were due today, May and June requests of 23,715 each approved.
London dispatch reports Vienna officials uncovered a plot by Austrian and German Nazis to topple the Austrian government and force an Austrian German union. The revelation comes as tensions rise over nationalist agitation in Austria.
The army blimp TC-13 conducted its second trial flight over Akron on May 4. Major William E. Kepner ordered the ship aloft as favorable weather began, with the 350000 cubic foot airship planned to cruise in the Akron area all day.
Generally fair conditions across Ohio tonight with increasing clouds Friday. Temperatures rise slowly in the northern part while rain chances appear in the southern portion.
The Cleveland Federation of Labor condemned Governor White's sales tax plan and endorsed the Pringle minimum fair wage bill for women and minors. Delegates urged local unions to protest any tax bill with state legislators and the Ohio Federation of Labor, arguing it places the burden on workers in a consumer tax.
Columbus reports public hearings on Governor White’s taxation plan range from 40 000 to 50 000 000. Rep William M Goodwin chairs the joint legislative committee and schedules hearings on Sales Tax and Earned Income Tax with a May 15 reconvening deadline. Electric interurban representatives sought a three year tax moratorium to continue operations.
City Auditor A. C. Schilleman announced the city received 6440 dollars from the state gasoline tax distribution. The state totals show 88 counties each getting 1000 and 1337 townships each receiving 500. Cities and villages were allocated 1 dollar per registered motor vehicle from a statewide 2,760,753 distribution.
The Ohio Chamber of Commerce executive committee rejected Governor White’s sales and income tax proposal. They reaffirmed backing for a selective sales tax on amusements malt soft drinks and tobacco, while criticizing the Mort School Plan and endorsing Dr. Skinner’s school funding plan. The chamber warned the revised program may shortfall the balanced budget by about 10 million.
The Senate Banking and Currency Committee is authorized to investigate the general conduct of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.
Prime Minister J Ramsay MacDonald told the House of Commons in London that discussion of war debts would be barred at the World Economic Conference in June. He said the tariff truce proposed by the United States during the conference would not be complete and would be adjusted to suit varying national needs.
The Ohio Electric Power Company asks the Court of Appeals to reverse a Common Pleas ruling denying an injunction against Oberlin. The village plans to issue 250000 in bonds to build or acquire an electric plant, a plan the power company calls illegal dual purpose. Oberlin previously won in 1897 citing later state laws supporting the village action.
Fifty five Elyria High School student musicians join hundreds from nine other cities for the Northern Ohio Band festival in Bucyrus. Participating schools include Sandusky Bellevue Norwalk Clyde Willard Fremont Fostoria Van Wert and Bucyrus. Events start 1 39 p m tomorrow with a massed band rehearsal followed by a banquet at 5 50 p m and a 8 15 p m massed band concert featuring 600 musicians directed by Henry Fillmore. A street parade is set for 2 p m Saturday followed by a Washington Square massed band concert.
Berlin May 4 Colonel Konstantin Hierl proposes tying military training to a national compulsory labor service for youths born in 1913. The plan would conscript 350000 youths into concentration camps beginning January 1 1954. They would lose citizenship rights and marriage eligibility until service completion.
President Roosevelt asks Congress for speedy enactment of a three point emergency plan for rehabilitation of railroads. He proposes repeal of recapture provisions of the ICC act, regulation of railway holding companies by the ICC, and creation of a Federal coordinator of transportation. As his message arrives, House committee chairman Rayburn releases administration legislation to implement the emergency proposals.
A letter to Governor White from Thomas Wright of the Fairfield County Farm and Home Defense League threatens a march on the Capitol if the Best Mortgage Moratorium Bill is not promptly advanced. Wright claims 2,000 farmers demand passage. the governor expresses doubt about threats but supports the bill and expects to sign it.
President Roosevelt will address the nation from the White House at 9 45 p m Sunday reviewing his stewardship from March 4 to the present time. He will discuss accomplishments thus far and goals before Congress adjourns for the special session.
In London the United States faced sharp censure in the House of Commons after Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald cited his Washington visit and the decision to bar war debt talks at the world economic conference. Sir Stafford Cripps condemned paying interest on gold bonds in paper currency as dishonest.
Elyria depositors committee through Vice Chairman E L Hukill announced today that a general meeting of all depositors will be called within a few days. The committee is selecting a place and will announce the time and place once secured.
Washington May 4 Only two of 84 senate amendments to the inflation bill cause real trouble as house and senate conferees work to merge differences. The house backed the senate provision on the commodity price increase. One amendment could broaden crop aid to sugar cane and sugar beets. The Norris-Simpson amendment would empower the secretary to guarantee cost of production plus a profit for domestic products, opposed by leadership. Conferees aim to resolve all differences by weekend for enactment early next week.
Ann Harding and two companions recount a sailboat capsize two miles off Jaime Amita s Yacht Club in a sudden squall. The Cuban skipper Magin Alvarez Piedra disappeared, and their Cuban sailor was drowned. They were rescued by a yacht owned by Englishman Waggrett after clinging to the overturned hull for hours.
Military courts of inquiry in Le Mars and Denison gathered evidence May 4 for trials of over one hundred farmers accused in the attempted hanging of Judge Charles C. Bradley. Suspects, held in guardhouses, were brought before a military commission. Authorities aim to identify more suspects and withdraw troops by week’s end. Suspects to be tried in civil courts on contempt of court charges.
A national strike call is being drafted by the National Farm Holiday association with 2,400 delegates from 24 states awaiting a vote. The plank urges a May 13 action under the slogan Buy nothing sell nothing stay at home. Mila Reno may direct duration, while outside support is sought to gain effectiveness.
Paris May 4 Foreign Minister Boncour indicated in the senate that France intends to seek a moratorium on her June debt payment to Washington. The move would extend for the duration of the world economic conference.
