Rough seas in Aniwa Bay Saghalien Island last night likely killed about 200 Japanese fishermen. Dispatches report 25 ships sank with a total herring haul valued at around $2,000,000. About 221 crewmen aboard the lost vessels are feared dead or missing.
Chicago March reports a cyclone blitz across nine central states with 23 fatalities and about 5 million dollars in damage. Tekamah Nebraska and Norborne Missouri areas face heavy losses. Westby Wisconsin records a fatality and continued outages as relief workers aid injured and homeless families.
Frank Sietser, census enumerator, announced Avon Village population at 1826 this year, up from 1460 in 1920, a gain of 366. Ridgeville and Carlisle townships also show large growth, with Carlisle possibly having the greatest ten year percentage gain in Lorain County. Lorain city count not yet complete, rural Lorain and Medina census work expected to finish tonight.
Elyria and Oberlin High School bands join ten bands from Lorain County and nearby communities at Bellevue for the third annual Northern Ohio High School Band Festival. The event opened with a grand concert featuring more than 600 musicians. a street parade was planned followed by an afternoon concert. Other school participants include Norwalk Clyde Willard Fremont Bucyrus Fostoria Sandusky and Bellevue.
In New York on May 3 heavy margins led to hundreds of small accounts being wiped out as millions of dollars were shaved from stock market value. Lewis I. Frazier a 46 year old road building contractor died from injuries after a dynamite cap exploded tearing a hole near his heart in Wilmington Delaware. He faced 37 counts including forgery and presenting fraudulent bills connected with alleged state highway graft. His trial was set for this month. He is survived by his widow and one daughter.
The number of Blue Ribbon pupils in county schools grows with 434 total so far as fourteen schools awarded ribbons over three days. South Amherst leads with 11 pupils from 35 percent enrollment, Brownhelm trails with 69 pupils, hoping to keep the Chronicle-Telegraph cup. Class B spots are led by Pittsfield No. 7, with Pittsfield No. 3 and Russia No. 2 close behind. Health Day at Elyria is set for Friday May 9. Harry Myers and David Stanton tied for first in Elyria city championship kite flying, each scoring 11 points under YMCA boys division. Harry Freeman placed third with 10 points, William Bowen fourth with eight, James Skinner fifth after defeating Roberts Lehman in a runoff. The top five earn a trip to the Cleveland St. Louis game in Cleveland on March 24.
A proposed Cleveland garbage disposal plant may be built near Grafton as regulators consider zoning. Councilman Trinastie said locals have acquired land near Grafton and would sell it for the plant. The plan envisions hauling waste to lead ing transfer stations then railcar transport to Grafton.
Kenneth Moody and Dessie Sutton wed in a ceremony by Justice Walter Watts. Moody alleges his parents abducted Dessie from their home before they could depart for Niagara Falls, prompting habeas corpus action in common pleas court. Deputy sheriffs searched Suttons’ home area for Dessie and plan further inquiries Monday.
Eugene Rainey, 20, of 605 Lodi Street, was dragged into a sedan by three men and severely beaten on Lodi Street at midnight Friday. He was dumped on Furnace Street after a first aid visit at home. police have not captured the suspects. Police note Rainey has faced prior assault in recent weeks.
County official C. T. Biggs reports the Erie Avenue Bridge is being painted with black and red above and red below. The city of Lorain seeks a new higher structure, but no new work is being undertaken presently.
G C Dunham, county surveyor, reports almost 200 grade crossings exist in rural Lorain County outside incorporated towns. The count excludes Lorain, Elyria, Oberlin, Amherst, Wellington, Grafton, Avon Lake, Avon, La Grange, Sheffield Lake, and Rochester. Two townships, Henrietta and Confederates, have no crossings.
Elyria town observes Boys Week and Girls Week with church services and Sunday schools featuring special sermons and orchestra parts. A large parade Monday will showcase boys and girls with judges, banners, and guards. Girl Scouts, Eagles, and multiple musical groups will participate.
Injuries fatal to John Daly occurred when he was crushed between a farm roller and the aire on the P. K. Clark farm south of Bisha. He died at Elyria Memorial hospital from internal injuries. Funeral services for Daly, 61, will be held Wednesday at 9:34 a.m. from the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Grafton. Burial will be in Grafton cemetery. He leaves his widow Anna and three children Loretta Clarence and Jaze, plus two brothers and one sister.
