Stem cell donor saves 5 year old Jacob Kowalik life
A University of Florida donor, Marshal Davis, matched seven of eight factors to save Jacob Kowalik, a 5 year old with acute leukemia risk. The transplant occurred in October 2009 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, with cells sent to Chicago for Jacob. Jacob later faced graft versus host disease and ongoing photopheresis for treatment. The families met a year later and remain grateful as Jacob returns to school and sports.
