Ohio wild crops draw foragers ginseng pawpaw boom
Mary Rutter and other foragers chase Ohio’s spring bounty with morels and ferns while ginseng commands up to 400 dollars a pound, and pawpaw festivals grow. Digging rules require maturity, records, and one licensed dealer. Ohio’s woods across all 88 counties host a mix of edible plants and new markets led by individuals like Chris Chmiel who promotes spicebush and pawpaws.
