Buses diverted as illness hits school's outing

A group of 109 Port Clinton junior high eighth graders on a Washington DC trip fell ill on the way home after landing at Cleveland Hopkins. 40 were rushed to Lorain Community Hospital, one student Laura Hermes hospitalized then expected to be released. Doctors diagnosed flu-like illness with a hysteria factor. 25 more staff were called in. Troopers escorted buses to hospitals. some students remaining on buses were later sent to St Joseph's. Frostbitten fruit growers face heavy crop losses

In Lorain County and beyond, apples grapes strawberries peaches and plums suffer in some cases 73 to 90 percent losses while experts warn of higher fruit prices later this year. Volunteers sought to push tax boost in city election

Mayor Marguerte and Bowman called for volunteers to staff a committee backing a half percent income tax raise on the June 7 ballot. The funds would target debt retirement, with the tax running three years through June 30, 1980.
