Depreciation rule change sparks political clash
Sen Edmund Muskie charged the administration with violating the law by proposing depreciation rules that would cut business taxes by 3 billion dollars a year. President Nixon defended legality and job creation. The Treasury plan, retroactive to January 1, would accelerate depreciation, effectively lowering taxes by seven percent for businesses. Nolan disputed Muskie’s memo, while Treasury hearings set to begin. Several Democrats and liberal economists criticized the changes.
