The Elyria Republican primary centers on Archie H. West vs Gerald B. Martin for mayor. Polls run 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Elyria time. West seeks GOP nomination while Martin, mayor since 1953, faces possible rematch against Keys in November. Primary also includes four at large and ward council races with several incumbents running unopposed.
Four small children died when a frame house burned in south Philadelphia's Neck section. Their mother was badly burned trying to rescue them, authorities said. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and prompted an emergency response by local fire crews.

Benjamin F. Fairless announces retirement as United States Steel Corp. chairman after three years, to occur as directors meet to name a successor. He will remain a director and finance committee member. the 65th birthday next Tuesday ends his tenure. The 54th annual meeting drew a record turnout of over 800 stockholders.
Fairless, born May 3, rose from Civil Engineer to president of U S Steel, will receive a $70 000 annual pension or more, with $259 200 last year and take home pay of $72 346. He succeeded Irving S Olds as chairman. Olds led 1940 1952, preceded by Edward R Stettinius Jr. Board committee members include Otto Voorhees and Evita Hobby. Governors debate voluntary quotas and vaccine distribution for polio, with a tentative decision expected at today’s session.
A masked robber held up a Lorain bar taking cash before fleeing. A separate note from Washington reports the President's National Polio Advisory Committee met to draft quotas and priorities for nationwide Salk vaccine distribution.

The Mansfield Elyria high school baseball game scheduled for this afternoon was indefinitely postponed at 12 45 p m today. Mansfield is in a sectional tournament game today. An earlier story appears on page 21.
Coast Guard cutter plucked five men from the floundering raft Lehi after a dawn rescue 44 miles off California. Captain Devere Baker, 33, plus Leonard Hall, William Souza, George Harris, and Crawford Hartley were wet, cold and hungry. They had hoped to drift 2500 miles from San Francisco to Hawaii.
Ohio prosecutors filed five affidavits opposing Dr. Sam Sheppard’s bid for a new trial based on newly found evidence. Dr. Roger W. Marsters disputed Dr. Paul Kirk’s claim that a blood spot near Marilyn Sheppard’s bed could not belong to the victim or husband. Judge Blythin will rule Wednesday as defense access and the Bloody effects controversy draw scrutiny while Sheppard awaits a higher court decision.

Paris worries pressure could trigger a diplomatic break as the Paris Accords approach. France opposes Diem s rapid removal of French economic privileges while the U S backs him to prevent Viet Minh victory.
Canton residents faced a $250000 loss after a Sunday night fire destroyed two lumber yards and three homes. Three other business establishments were damaged as crews battled the blaze before bringing it under control.
